Cedar Creek, NE

Cedar Creek is a Cass County village west of Plattsmouth, where Cedar Creek runs toward the Platte River. The 2020 census counted 465 residents. The village sits in a landscape of farm fields, creek bottoms, county roads, and the railroad line that first gave the settlement its larger connection. Cedar Creek’s village hall and remaining older buildings keep the community’s center visible, while Plattsmouth and the Omaha area supply many regional services.

Swiss immigrant John Inhelder bought 520 acres here in 1861 and set aside 40 acres for a town called Inhelder Station. John Inhelder, George Sayles, and Isaac Sayles platted the settlement in 1865, and the plat was filed in 1879. The railroad later identified the station as Cedar Creek, a name taken from the cedar trees along the waterway. George Sayles became postmaster in 1876 and also served on the school board. The village grew slowly, but its basic outline still follows the old pattern: creek, rail station, farm land, and a small cluster of civic buildings.
