The University of Northern Iowa is large enough to shape Cedar Falls without defining the city by itself. Fall 2025 enrollment was 9,204, including 3,431 students living on campus, while the city's July 2025 Census estimate was 41,240 residents. Beyond classrooms and residence halls, Cedar Falls has an extensive municipal outdoor network. Its 2025 park plan counted 53.1 miles of paved off-road trails and another four miles of unpaved routes. Hartman Reserve extends across 287 acres from a bluff to the Cedar River, combining wetlands, prairie, meadow, and forest with exhibits and a web of trails and bridges. These systems connect a regional university setting to parks and natural land within the city. Downtown programming supplies another center of activity away from campus.
