Celeste, TX

Ten miles northwest of Greenville, Celeste sits on U.S. 69 near the headwaters of the Sabine River. It began as a railroad town in 1886, when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway platted a site three miles north of Kingston beside the Missouri, Kansas and Texas line. The town’s post office opened the same year, and merchants moved in from Kingston. By the early 1900s, Celeste had banks, cotton gins, gristmills, a newspaper, churches, a school, waterworks, and an ice factory. The railroad put a commercial center on open prairie, then agriculture supplied much of the work around it.

Celeste still has the practical pieces of a small county town: City Hall, water and sewer service, police, public works, the Celeste Independent School District, and local businesses along the highway. A little library in front of City Hall and a little food pantry give the civic center two everyday uses beyond municipal offices. The city’s calendar includes an annual Fall Festival and Christmas parade, and the Celeste Courier archive preserves 1,319 newspaper items from 1951 through 1979. The layout is easy to picture: U.S. 69 and the old rail corridor meet the school, civic services, and the southeast road to Greenville.
