Celina, TN

Celina is the Clay County seat in the Upper Cumberland, where the Cumberland and Obey Rivers meet. The 2020 census counted 1,422 residents. The city was founded in the nineteenth century and named for the daughter of pioneer Moses Fisk. In its earlier working years, Celina was a logging town: timber cut east of town was floated down the Obey River to the river landing. Today the water story is still the big one. The river valley sits within Cordell Hull Lake, and Dale Hollow Lake begins just east at Dale Hollow Dam, giving the town a strong connection to fishing, boating, and the long shoreline beyond the city streets.

Celina’s center carries the county-seat load, with the courthouse square, city services, schools, local shops, and routes Tennessee 52 and 53 crossing through the wider community. The town’s history also includes a painful 1878 episode in which African Americans were violently driven from Celina and nearby Freehill; it belongs in the local story without being glossed over. Most days, though, the rhythm is county work, river access, school events, and trips out toward Dale Hollow. Celina is a small courthouse city with an unusually large map around it, where the Obey and Cumberland bring the lake country right up to town.
