About Center City
Center City is Chisago County's seat, founded in 1851 by Anders Swenson, a Swedish settler from Smaland. The village was platted in 1857, took the name Centre City when its post office opened in 1858, and became Center City in 1893. The city has been the county seat since 1875, and its Swedish beginning is still part of the official story through a sister-city relationship with Hassela, Sweden. Center City is an east-central Minnesota place where a courthouse town, a Swedish beginning, and a name change fit the same short timeline.
