About Central Lake

Central Lake is an Antrim County village inside Central Lake Township, in northwest Lower Michigan's chain-of-lakes country. The first settlers arrived in the early 1860s, the village was platted in 1873, and incorporation followed in 1889. Timber and rich farm soil brought people in, while a post office, water lines, and electricity turned a scattered settlement into a real village. Water was piped through town in 1897, and electric service reached it in 1900, useful dates for understanding how quickly the place took on a civic shape.

Today the center is more village than resort strip: historic homes from the lumber era sit near churches, the district library, the historical society, and the garden club. Central Lake's name fits the wider setting, with lakes and rivers linking the village to the rest of Antrim County, but daily life still runs through local institutions and the township road grid. The local scoop is that the lake-country setting is only half the story. The other half is a small incorporated village that built its own services early and still keeps its civic life close to the village streets.
