About Central Square

Central Square is an Oswego County village of 1,862 residents in the 2020 census, in the Town of Hastings northwest of Oneida Lake. NY 49, U.S. 11, and nearby I-81 put it on a north-south road network between Syracuse, Oswego, and the lake country. The place began at a Native trail crossroads and was first called Loomis Corners after Chester Loomis, who built a hotel there. The village incorporated in 1890, when it had roughly 500 residents, and the square still functions as the recognizable center. Railroad history remains unusually visible.

Central Square Station once handled coal, milk, and freight headed toward Oswego; the original station burned in 1903, the rebuilt 1909 building was abandoned in 1957, and the rails still carry CSX traffic. The station museum preserves that transportation story, while Central Square Central School District connects the village with a wider three-county school area. Oneida Lake is close enough to shape weekends and summer routines, so Central Square combines a highway village center with a rail past and a lakeside regional orbit.
