Step inside the Cerritos Library and you are greeted by a towering replica of a T-rex skeleton alongside a massive saltwater aquarium. Designed with elaborate themed rooms and interactive spaces, it feels like a hands-on discovery center, making it a favorite spot for local families. The library anchors the city's Civic Center alongside City Hall and the peaceful Cerritos Sculpture Garden, creating a welcoming community hub right on the Los Angeles and Orange County border. It can be hard to picture today, but this suburban community started out in the 1950s as Dairy Valley, where dairy cows famously outnumbered residents nearly thirty to one.

As Southern California grew throughout the 1960s, local dairies, strawberry fields, and chicken farms gradually made way for planned residential neighborhoods. The town adopted the name Cerritos and established quiet, tree-lined residential tracts thoughtfully buffered from heavier commercial traffic. To keep public services well-funded while keeping local taxes manageable, the city developed dedicated retail centers along key corridors. That forward-thinking planning led to the creation of the Cerritos Auto Square off Studebaker Road, which quickly became one of the most successful retail auto centers in the region.

Commercial hubs like the Auto Square and the Cerritos Towne Center along the 91 Freeway provide steady funding for high-end city amenities. The Towne Center serves as a major retail and dining destination, anchored by the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. With an adaptable auditorium that can shift its seating and stage layout for recitals, symphonies, or arena-style concerts, the venue hosts everything from touring musical acts to local school performances. Having a top-tier theater in town gives residents an easy cultural night out right in their own backyard.

On Saturday mornings, locals gather in the theater parking lot for the weekly farmers market to pick up fresh produce, artisan bread, seafood, and cut flowers. Community traditions run strong throughout the year, including the annual Spring Fling celebration, summer concerts, and holiday tributes at the Civic Center. The sculpture garden also hosts a solemn gathering each August to honor those lost in the 1986 Cerritos air disaster.
