Chadwicks, NY

Chadwicks is a census-designated place in the Town of New Hartford, set along Sauquoit Creek in Oneida County. It is part of the Utica–Rome region, but the creek valley gives the hamlet its own texture. In the early 1800s, the waterway powered mills and drew factories; the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad later added a station and another connection to the outside world. The old mill corridor, wooded creek edges, and nearby roads still frame the place.

John Chadwick, Abner Brownell, and Ira Todd established the Eagle Cotton Factory and Willowvale Bleachery in 1813. Mill owners built houses for workers, and a number of those homes remain. The stone Eagle Cotton Factory replaced an earlier wooden mill after an 1844 fire, while Johnson’s Store also housed the post office. Chadwicks now shares New Hartford’s schools and services, with Sauquoit nearby for many students. Its local story is carried by the creek, the surviving mill-era buildings, and the neighborhood pattern that grew around them.
