Chaffee, MO

Chaffee is a Scott County city in southeast Missouri, laid out in 1905 and named for Adna Chaffee, the Army officer associated with the Spanish–American War era. The 2020 census counted 3,057 residents. Its setting near the Mississippi River helped connect the town to the region’s farm and transportation economy, while the flat southeastern Missouri landscape gives it a different feel from the Ozark towns farther west.

Manufacturing is a big part of Chaffee’s story. Textile work and nearby cotton production shaped the local economy for decades, and that industrial thread still helps distinguish the city from a purely agricultural crossroads. The town has its own school district and public library, while Three Rivers College provides a nearby higher-education connection in the Bootheel region. The older commercial blocks and civic buildings make that history easier to place on the ground. Chaffee’s appeal is in those layers sitting close together: a planned early-1900s town, a working industrial past, and the practical institutions that keep a small city functioning today.
