Chalfant, PA

Chalfant is a borough in Allegheny County, just east of Pittsburgh, occupying roughly two-tenths of a square mile between Wilkins Township, Forest Hills, and North Braddock. It began with the Chalfant family, especially Henry Chalfant, an early settler, innkeeper, landowner, and postmaster in the Turtle Creek Valley. The borough broke away from Wilkins Township in 1914, when the area had a little over 100 homes and about 500 people. Farmland soon gave way to houses, workshops, and the everyday fabric of an eastern suburb.

Chalfant's history tracks the larger change across Pittsburgh's edges. Farming was followed by blue-collar and machinery work, and postwar housing and industrial changes reshaped the borough's population and street pattern. The borough's small municipal boundary is still packed with streets, homes, and the close-in geography of the Monongahela–Allegheny region. It is the kind of place that can look like a neighborhood on a regional map but still has a separate council, borough services, and a family name reaching back to the first local landowners. Chalfant's 2020 census population was 748.
