Chalkyitsik is a close-knit Gwich’in community set along the Black River in the Yukon Flats, roughly 50 miles east of Fort Yukon. True to its name, which translates to “fish-hooking place,” fishing and seasonal traditions remain central to everyday life. Local children attend Tsuk Taih School from pre-K through 12th grade, making the campus a natural gathering place for families. With no road access, travel in and out relies on small planes, riverboats, and seasonal trails.
