Challis, ID

Challis is Custer County's seat and largest city, set where the Salmon River country meets the roads toward Stanley, Salmon, and the Yankee Fork. The post office dates to 1878, and the town's older economy grew from ranching, mining, and farming. U.S. 93 and Idaho 75 put Challis on the Salmon River Scenic Byway, so the city works as a service point for a huge surrounding landscape. The river is more than scenery here: it is the corridor connecting the town to the Salmon-Challis National Forest, historic mining sites, and the backcountry routes that run north and south.

Present-day Challis keeps those threads in view. City Hall and the Custer County courthouse sit near Main Street, while the city points visitors toward trails, the golf course, the public library, and the Chamber's scenic-route network. The byway runs through town on Highway 75, with Land of the Yankee Fork State Park and its mining-history sites nearby. Local life is therefore a mix of county-seat business, ranch and service work, and seasonal traffic heading into the wilderness. Challis's local clue is the road junction: a compact Idaho city carrying the practical load for river, ranch, mine, and forest country.
