About Chalmers

Chalmers is a White County town in Big Creek Township, a railroad place that began taking shape in the 1850s. Gardner Mudge donated land for the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway after the line reached Big Creek, and the town was platted in 1873 as Mudge's Station. Railroad timetables were already using the name Chalmers by 1856, and a depot was built in 1895. The 2020 census counted 523 residents. The school and town offices sit near the old rail corridor.

Frontier School Corporation is headquartered downtown, with the school offices and main street keeping Chalmers tied to the surrounding farm country. The annual Chalmers Community Day brings a pancake breakfast, pork dinner, car show, and motorcycle show into the town calendar. Meadow Lake Wind Farm spreads across the countryside beside town, adding a modern energy landmark to the old rail landscape. Chalmers is a place where depot history, school life, community food, and wind power share the same flat White County horizon.
