About Chalmette
Chalmette is a census-designated place in St. Bernard Parish, just east of New Orleans and part of the Greater New Orleans area. It is best known nationally for the Chalmette Battlefield, now part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, where the Battle of New Orleans was fought. The community also carries the memory of Hurricane Katrina, especially in residential areas away from the Mississippi River. Chalmette feels deeply local to the New Orleans region: historic, working-class, and tied to river, refinery, and parish life.
