Chama, NM

Chama sits in the Rocky Mountains of Rio Arriba County, about seven miles south of the Colorado line. The village grew from the Tierra Amarilla Land Grant and the Denver & Rio Grande’s 1880 San Juan Extension, which pushed west from Antonito toward the mining country of the northern San Juan Basin. With 917 residents in the 2020 census, Chama is small in population but large in the amount of mountain territory folded into ordinary life: the Rio Chama, high-elevation forests, trout water, and roads that climb toward the pass.

The old rail line still supplies the town’s signature movement. Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad trains leave from the Chama depot for the 64-mile route to Antonito, crossing high country and the state line. Village Hall on State Highway 17 handles permits, meetings, notices, and other town business, while Chama Valley Independent Schools serve children through Chama Middle/Elementary and Escalante Middle/High School. Downtown shops, lodging, restaurants, and train-day traffic give the village a seasonal pulse, but the school calendar and village council keep the year-round rhythm grounded.
