About Chapman

Chapman is a Dickinson County city that grew beside Chapman Creek after its first settlement in 1868 and formal town layout in 1871. The early community began with farms, a mill, and Dickinson County High School, established in 1886, while Irish immigrants left their mark on the town's school colors, mascot, and St. Patrick's Cemetery. Chapman is also the hometown of Joe Engle, the Air Force test pilot and NASA astronaut whose 1981 Space Shuttle Columbia flight gave the prairie town a place in space history. The Kansas Auto Racing Hall of Fame adds another local landmark. Chapman is a Kansas city where creek, school, astronaut, and racing stories share the same map.
