About Charleroi

Charleroi is a Washington County borough along the Monongahela, 21 miles south of Pittsburgh, where the street grid still carries the feel of a factory town. Settled in 1890 and incorporated in 1891, it took the name of the Belgian city and grew around glassmaking, with river transport moving materials and finished goods along the Mon Valley. The Charleroi Historic District and old industrial sites keep that identity visible, while North Charleroi, Speers, and Twilight mark the surrounding map. Charleroi is the Mon Valley in a Belgian-name-and-glass story.
