About Charleston

Charleston is a historic city and one of the two seats of government for Franklin County, Arkansas. Platted in 1870, the town lies along Arkansas Highway 22, situated twenty-four miles east of Fort Smith. The community holds a significant place in civil rights history as the first school district in the former Confederate States to implement public school integration following the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision. Today, the local Charleston School District continues to serve the town's twenty-six hundred residents.
