Charlotte Court House, VA

Charlotte Court House is the Charlotte County seat in south-central Virginia, with 505 residents in the 2020 census. Virginia Route 40 passes through the town center, where the courthouse green, county offices, old homes, and the Charlotte Court House Historic District make the place feel like a courthouse village, with little of a conventional commercial town’s character. Patrick Henry gave his last political speech here in March 1799.

The district includes the Charlotte County Courthouse, the Brick Tavern built around 1820, Randolph-Henry High School, and other buildings that keep the county seat’s older shape visible. The courthouse remains the town’s clearest organizing point, with county business and local history sharing the same few blocks along Route 40. Central Middle School and county government give the small town year-round purpose, while roads lead west toward Brookneal and east toward Keysville.
