Chefornak, AK

Chefornak is a small Yup’ik village tucked along the south bank of the Kinia River in western Alaska’s Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The town took shape in the 1950s when an elder named Alexie Amagiqchik moved inland from the Bering Sea coast to open a general store, and other families soon followed. Today, it is a tight-knit community with deep roots in the surrounding tundra and coastal waters.

Life here follows the rhythm of the river, which doubles as the local highway for boats in the summer and snowmobiles when the water freezes over. Village kids attend school locally in a building named after town founders, where Yup’ik culture remains a central part of daily learning. Situated in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, Chefornak offers a peaceful, off-the-grid lifestyle centered around subsistence fishing, hunting, and strong neighborly bonds.
