The locale was originally established in 1924 as a station on the Southern Pacific Cascade Line named "Knott" during construction. The through line in Chemult is the way its history and present-day settings remain visible on the same map. Chemult makes the most sense through those concrete details, with its history still visible in the settings people use today. The station's name was changed to Chemult when the line opened in 1926 and a post office was established the same year.
