About Chenega

Chenega is a census-designated place on Evans Island in Prince William Sound, comprising the Chugach Alutiiq village of Chenega Bay. The original Chenega community, on Chenega Island to the north, was destroyed by the 1964 Good Friday earthquake; the name derives from the Alutiiq phrase meaning Beneath the Mountain. With a population of 59 at the 2020 census, the village is accessible only by boat or plane, and is served by the Chenega Bay Community School through the Chugach School District.
