Chesaning, MI

Chesaning is a Saginaw County village on the Shiawassee River, about 15 miles upstream from the river's confluence with the Saginaw River. The 2020 census counted 2,430 residents. The early business district grew on the river's east side, then fires and the railroad helped shift commercial activity west. A dam built in 1863 for grist-mill work shaped the village for generations; when it was removed in 2008, the river dropped and the shoreline changed again. Agriculture still fills the land beyond the village, while M-57 carries traffic through the center.

Chesaning's old Showboat City name comes from the festival that ran from 1937 until 2013. The dam once allowed the showboat to reach the village, and Showboat Park grew into a 67-acre community park with more than a mile of river shoreline, an oxbow area, ball fields, camping, and space for events. The boat was sold and dismantled in 2015, but the park and other festivals keep the tradition in circulation. Chesaning Union Schools, the historical society, and the village's tall broadcast towers add current institutions to the river story. The local shorthand is simple: a small Saginaw County place where water, rail, music, and farming have taken turns setting the center.
