Chesapeake Landing, MD

Chesapeake Landing is a census-designated place in Kent County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, built around residential roads, water access, and former farmland. The development dates to 1961, when Lake Resorts Construction and Chesapeake Landing Inc. bought 791 acres from several local families. The land had been farmed for centuries after a royal grant to the Graves family, whose tobacco operation was among the largest in Maryland for more than a century.

Historic traces remain around Worton Creek. Records note taxes on shipments at the wharf as early as 1748, and the community clubhouse reuses a farm barn with original eighteenth-century beams and stone foundations. Since 1976, the Chesapeake Landing Community Association has overseen two marinas, the clubhouse, a small lake, and nature areas under a court-ordered stewardship arrangement. Those features give the Kent County CDP a clear physical story: an old agricultural waterfront parcel reshaped into a residential community whose shared facilities still carry pieces of the earlier farm and wharf landscape.
