Chesnee, SC

Chesnee sits in the northeast corner of Spartanburg County, with a small piece crossing into Cherokee County. US 221 runs through the center as Alabama Avenue and Hampton Street, linking town with Rutherfordton to the north and Spartanburg to the south. SC 11, Cherokee Street, cuts across the same crossroads and reaches Cowpens National Battlefield east toward Gaffney. That road pattern gives Chesnee a distinctly upstate feel: a compact center surrounded by working countryside and larger regional destinations.

The town grew from a land company venture in the early 1900s. John B. Cleveland named it for his Scottish great-grandmother, Margaret Chesnee; the post office followed in 1910, and the town received its charter in 1911. Early businesses included a hotel, pharmacy, cotton mill, and lumber mill. Today Chesnee High and the other Spartanburg District 2 schools, the library branch, and CADA Park give the small city its everyday rhythm, while the Zeno Hicks House and nearby Cowpens battlefield keep its longer history close at hand.
