Chester Hill, PA

Chester Hill is a Clearfield County borough on the west bank of Moshannon Creek, across from Philipsburg in Centre County. Jacob F. Steiner laid out the community in 1849, and it incorporated in 1883. Lumber came first; the Fire Brick Works of Harbison-Walker later gave the borough a distinctive industrial role, alongside coal operations and rail connections including the Altoona & Philipsburg Connecting Railroad and the Tyrone Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The 2020 census counted 821 people. The creek remains the borough’s physical edge.

Chester Hill still works through its Philipsburg relationship. The borough’s service list directs water customers to Pennsylvania American Water, sewage to Moshannon Valley Sewage Authority, electricity to Penelec, and residents to a trash collection service. Those arrangements put everyday utilities on a regional network, while the creek and the borough’s compact streets keep the place legible as its own municipality. Philipsburg is across the water for the practical connections that Chester Hill’s history has always depended on.
