About Chesterfield

Chesterfield is an Indiana town split between Madison and Delaware counties, with the White River along its northern edge. Amasa Makepeace laid out the settlement as West Union in 1830; the name changed to Chesterfield in 1834, and the railroad’s arrival in 1852 helped turn it into a town. The Chesterfield Spiritualist Camp District and George Makepeace House are on the National Register, tying the older town to a present-day river-and-highway map. Chesterfield is an east-central Indiana place where county lines, White River, rail, and a renamed pioneer town come together.
