Chesterfield, MO

If you look at Chesterfield Valley today, it is hard to imagine it was once known as Gumbo Flats and suffered catastrophic flooding during the Great Flood of 1993. Following a massive levee overhaul, the lowlands beside the Missouri River completely transformed into one of the region's largest shopping and commercial hubs. Today, the valley is packed with major retail centers, sports complexes, warehouses, and Spirit of St. Louis Airport. It is a busy, convenient expanse where residents from all over West County head to run weekend errands, attend soccer tournaments, or catch a bite to eat.

Up above the valley, the rest of Chesterfield spreads out across rolling wooded hills and quiet residential neighborhoods. Because the city only incorporated in 1988 by uniting several older unincorporated communities, there is no single historic main street. Instead, daily life revolves around busy corridors like Interstate 64, Clarkson Road, and Olive Boulevard. Families are often drawn here by highly rated schools in the Parkway and Rockwood districts, easy access to major healthcare employers like St. Luke's Hospital, and a wide selection of spacious single-family subdivisions.

Chesterfield is also in the middle of creating the walkable downtown district it never had. The site of the old Chesterfield Mall is being redeveloped into a fresh mixed-use neighborhood, bringing together new apartments, shops, restaurants, and a central park for community gatherings. Just down the road, Wildhorse Village has already introduced modern lakeside townhomes, walking paths, and neighborhood dining. These developments give locals pedestrian-friendly spots to meet friends for dinner without sacrificing the area's relaxed suburban feel.

Parks and recreation are a big part of why people love living here. Near City Hall, Central Park features walking paths, a community aquatic center, and the Chesterfield Amphitheater, which hosts outdoor movie nights and live summer concerts. Over at Faust Park, you will find the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House, a restored 1920s carousel, and historic homes that host regular family events. For runners and cyclists, the Monarch Levee Trail traces the edge of the valley, offering miles of smooth, paved paths with easy connections to the Katy Trail network.
