About Chevy Chase

Chevy Chase Lake began where the Georgetown Branch freight line met the Rock Creek Railway streetcar, and that old transit junction still shapes the area. In 1892, Coquelin Run was dammed to make a lake that cooled the streetcar power plant and supported an amusement park; the lake was drained in the 1930s, but its name remains on the neighborhood and road. Rock Creek forms much of its northern and eastern edge, while Connecticut Avenue, East-West Highway, Jones Bridge Road, and Jones Mill Road carry most cross-community traffic. For 2020–2024, 75.9 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, and the mean journey to work was 27.5 minutes. Everyday public space is distributed along those corridors. Chevy Chase Library on Connecticut Avenue has public computers, a meeting room, a world-languages collection, bilingual early-literacy stations, and transit-card services.

On opposite sides of East-West Highway, the 17.1-acre Ray's Meadow Park and 16.6-acre Meadowbrook Park place playgrounds and athletic fields beside Rock Creek Park; Ray's Meadow also carries a section of the Capital Crescent Trail, while Meadowbrook adds lighted courts and a reservable activity building. Transportation construction is a visible part of local life in 2026. Purple Line crews are building the light-rail station and trail along the former Georgetown Branch between Elm Street and Rock Creek, and live-wire vehicle testing began in June. The Maryland Transit Administration expects passenger service in late 2027. A Capital Bikeshare station at Connecticut Avenue and Chevy Chase Lake Drive places shared bicycles beside the same trail corridor.
