Chewsville, MD

Chewsville is a Washington County census-designated place at a road junction in northeastern Maryland, where MD 62, MD 64, and Twin Springs Drive meet near Smithsburg. Twin Springs follows the old alignment of MD 64 through the center, and the state routes connect the settlement with Smithsburg, Hagerstown, Leitersburg, and the Pennsylvania line. The older center also carried a Western Maryland Railway station, a post office, and an express agency, giving Chewsville the shape of a former rail stop after the tracks and station left the scene.

Present-day Chewsville is held together by a few durable places. Bethel United Methodist Church at 21006 Twin Springs Drive has Sunday school, worship, and a pavilion used for gatherings. A community center on White Hall Road has served as a polling place, and the surrounding homes and farm roads still spread out from the highway junction. Chewsville is easiest to picture as a crossroads community: an old rail alignment under Maryland highways, with a church, community center, and nearby Smithsburg shaping the local map.
