Chiefland, FL

At the 2020 census, Chiefland was a Levy County city of 2,316 people at the crossroads of U.S. 19, U.S. 98, and Alternate 27. The town's setting is shaped by the Suwannee Valley and by the working countryside around it: peanuts, watermelons, hay, cattle, dairy, timber, and aquaculture have all had a place in the local economy. Long before the modern road network, Timucua people lived in villages south of present-day Chiefland and near Manatee Springs. That older landscape still feels close because the spring and the river are part of the town's everyday geography.

Downtown Chiefland has its own bit of stagecraft. The Chief Theatre, built as a movie house in 1948 and reopened as a playhouse in 1998, is home to the Suwannee Valley Players, who bring live productions to the old screen-era building. About six miles west, Manatee Springs State Park sends a first-magnitude spring at a steady 72 degrees into the Suwannee River, with manatees showing up when the river turns cooler. Chiefland's character comes from that overlap: a farm-and-highway town with a community theater downtown and a clear spring just beyond the edge of town.
