About Chillum

The center combines a full basketball court, fitness and dance rooms, a game room, child-care programs, and a playground. Next door, the indoor Rollingcrest-Chillum Splash Pool has a slide, splash pad, lockers, and scheduled water-fitness classes. In summer 2026 the complex also hosted a six-week evening recreation program with extended hours for teens. These are unusually concentrated public resources for a place covering 3.37 square miles. Chillum had 36,039 residents in the 2020 census, a population density of about 10,688 per square mile. Two stream corridors provide longer routes beyond the recreation complex. Sligo Creek Trail is a 10.2-mile hard-surface path, while the 11.7-mile Northwest Branch Trail combines 2.7 paved miles with nine miles of natural surface.

The current federal-grant schedule runs from design in 2025-2027 into construction through 2031. Its Chillum work includes rehabilitation of both systems and a new shared-use connection from the Northwest Branch Trail in Chillum Community Park through Avondale toward Eastern Avenue in Washington; that link is not yet a finished continuous route. Recent Census data add another dimension to present-day Chillum. During 2020-2024, 51.1 percent of residents were foreign-born and 65.4 percent of people age five and older spoke a language other than English at home. The recreation complex, pool, and stream-valley routes function as common public settings in a community with both high population density and widespread multilingual home life.
