Chimney Rock Village, NC

Chimney Rock Village sits in Rutherford County at the base of Chimney Rock State Park and along the Rocky Broad River, in Hickory Nut Gorge. The place grew around the granite outcropping that gave it its name. A post office opened in 1880, the rock opened to public visitors in 1885, and the Freeman and Morse families built the early visitor business around horseback rides, stairs, inns, roads, and bridges. In 1991 the village incorporated; in 2007 North Carolina purchased the park and made it an official state park.

Tourism still organizes the local map—Main Street shops and restaurants, the park entrance, the river, hiking, fishing, and the routes to Lake Lure and Hendersonville. But the village's recent story includes a hard reset: Hurricane Helene's September 2024 flooding destroyed homes, businesses, bridges, roads, and utilities. Water and sewer returned to Main Street in July 2025, allowing businesses to reopen in August, and the village remains in long-term recovery. The local scoop is that Chimney Rock is both a mountain attraction and a working village rebuilding its riverfront life.
