About China Lake Acres
China Lake Acres is a Kern County CDP of 1,757 residents in the 2020 census, an unincorporated desert community in the Indian Wells Valley west of Ridgecrest. Its name puts it near the region’s biggest geographic and institutional marker: China Lake, the dry lake and Naval Air Weapons Station that shape the valley’s roads, airspace, and working map. Ridgecrest is the nearby incorporated city, and the Kern County Sheriff’s Ridgecrest substation covers China Lake Acres as part of a wide eastern Kern response area.
The high desert setting is the other half of the story. Highway 178 and local roads run between Ridgecrest, Inyokern, the China Lake ranges, and the dry-lake country. The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division develops and tests airborne systems across the station’s roughly 1.1-million-acre Mojave footprint, making military engineering the defining regional industry even though China Lake Acres remains unincorporated. The local scoop is a named desert community beside a Navy test range, with Ridgecrest as its closest city reference.
