China, TX

China is a Jefferson County city in the Beaumont–Port Arthur area, and its name came from a railroad water stop set among chinaberry trees. A small settlement grew around China Grove in the 1860s; the post office adopted China in 1893, and after a 1906 depot fire the railroad rebuilt in nearby Nashland while keeping the established China name. The community incorporated as a city in 1971. Rice farming and nearby oil and natural-gas fields remain part of the surrounding work landscape.

The city’s civic map still carries that history. Hardin–Jefferson Independent School District connects China with Nome and Sour Lake; former school campuses were rearranged into China Elementary, Henderson Middle School, and a city civic complex. China Elementary’s old Chinaberry Festival once brought a parade, local musicians, vendors, and church groups together, though Hurricane Rita ended the school-hosted version after 2005. Chinaberry trees planted at the civic complex keep the name tied to the ground. China’s local story is a railroad-and-rice town whose school buildings, civic spaces, and namesake trees preserve the older pattern.
