Chisholm, ME

Chisholm is an industrial village in the town of Jay, on the east side of the Androscoggin River near the Livermore Falls line. Its name comes from Hugh J. Chisholm, who built the Otis Falls Pulp & Paper Company here in 1888. River waterpower, timber, and mills shaped the valley, turning what might look like a small river settlement into a place tied to Maine's paper economy. The falls and river still supply the geography: streets run along the water, and the southern edge meets Livermore Falls' urban core.

Today Chisholm's local setting is carried through Jay's municipal services and the paper heritage that remains around the Androscoggin. The town office handles taxes, sewer bills, permits, roads, and notices; the Jay-Niles Library, recreation programs, Spruce Mountain schools, and Maine's Paper & Heritage Museum add places for the week beyond the mill. The old industrial story belongs to the village itself. It is in the river, the mill sites, the road connections, and the families whose work once moved paper from western Maine into wider markets. Chisholm is a mill village with the river still doing the orienting.
