Christoval, TX

Christoval is a Tom Green County census-designated place south of San Angelo, set around the South Concho River, Loop 110, U.S. Highway 277, and Ranch Road 2084. The settlement grew along the old Toe Nail Trail between Fort McKavett and Fort Concho. Christopher C. Doty arrived in the area in 1879, opened a store, and applied for a post office in 1888. The office was approved in 1889 under the name Christoval, a changed spelling of the name he suggested from the Spanish form of Christopher. The river and nearby springs soon drew both ranch families and seasonal visitors.

Christoval's biggest gatherings once centered on the South Concho. The Baptist congregation organized in 1889, and the first annual summer encampment began on the riverbank in 1911. The event attracted thousands through the 1930s, while mineral waters and the river made the community a regional retreat. A flood on September 17, 1936, destroyed the encampment grounds and parts of Christoval; the property later became a public park. Pugh River Park now occupies riverfront near Ranch Road 2084, and Playland Park sits by Loop 110 and Toe Nail Trail. Christoval Independent School District serves the community.
