Church Point, LA

Church Point is an Acadia Parish town in south-central Louisiana, with 4,179 residents in the 2020 census. It grew from a clearing called Plaquemine Brûlé near a slough off Bayou Mermentau, and that French and Cajun background still shapes the town’s voice. The old nickname, Buggy Capital of the World, comes from the horse-drawn buggies residents used well into the 1950s. Church Point sits within reach of I-10 and I-49, so many people work across the parish or in the larger towns nearby, while rice, soybeans, corn, sugarcane, and crawfish remain part of the surrounding agricultural picture. The annual Buggy Festival is no longer the town’s big weekend, but the buggy story has not vanished.

Church Point still has the Courir de Mardi Gras, Cajun music and food, and the Cajun Woodstock benefit, with local traditions gathering around the hospital, parks, and civic groups. Richard’s Cajun Foods and Church Point Wholesale add a business side that reaches beyond town limits. Town government is working through street, utility, park, lighting, and recreation upgrades, with a new park and entertainment complex in the plans. Church Point feels like a working Acadian town where old French language and Mardi Gras customs sit beside hospitals, food businesses, farm roads, and the daily commute.
