Circle, AK

Circle sits at the very end of the Steese Highway, about 160 miles northeast of Fairbanks right along the Yukon River. Gold miners originally named the town in the 1890s, thinking they had crossed the Arctic Circle, even though they were actually about fifty miles south of it. Today, Circle is a small Athabascan village where life centers on subsistence fishing, hunting, and the river itself, which serves as the main route for boats heading into the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. For anyone considering a move here, it is quiet, rugged, and truly remote interior Alaska living.
