About Citrus City
Citrus City is a Hidalgo County community with an unusual planned-town story. Howard Moffitt started it in 1943 as a World War II-era project built around orange and grapefruit growing, but the irrigation water proved too saline for the plan to work as intended. A handful of Moffitt cottages remain, giving the place a distinctive architectural thread. Today Citrus City sits in the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area as a South Texas community where the original citrus idea still lingers in the name and surviving houses.
