The community has roots that stretch back well before the arrival of modern suburban subdivisions. In the mid-1800s, it was a quiet agricultural settlement centered around the historic one-room Sylvan School. In the early 1900s, land developers subdivided the region's citrus groves and ranches into ten-acre lots, giving Citrus Heights its permanent name. Auburn Boulevard has its own rich history, having evolved from a Gold Rush freight trail and part of the Lincoln Highway into a bustling modern thoroughfare. You can still see echoes of that past at Rusch Community Park, where a preserved 1914 homestead and botanical garden sit right beside modern sports fields and playgrounds.

Parks and local gatherings help maintain a friendly, neighborly atmosphere throughout the year. Rusch Park serves as a central outdoor hub with sports courts, community pools, and picnic areas for weekend get-togethers. During the warmer months, locals head to Van Maren Park for the Citrus Nights concert series to enjoy live music, local food trucks, and craft beverages, or check out seasonal pop-up markets near the shopping districts. Residents also stay engaged through eleven active neighborhood associations that meet monthly at the Sylvan Community Center, keeping the area's original 19th-century name alive in local planning.

Citrus Heights operated as an unincorporated county territory for decades before officially voting to become an independent city in 1997. Today, the most significant project on the horizon is the transformation of the 100-acre Sunrise Mall site. The city has approved plans to reimagine the sprawling property into a walkable town center with new housing, restaurants, open plazas, and a proposed sports and entertainment complex. While the buildout will unfold gradually over the coming years, the vision promises to bring fresh energy, entertainment, and modern amenities to the heart of town.
