About Clairton

Clairton is an Allegheny County city on the Monongahela River, 13 miles south of Pittsburgh, with 6,181 residents in the 2020 census. The city was laid out in 1903 as a steel-and-coke town, and Clairton Coke Works still gives the river valley its defining industrial scale. The plant is the largest coke-manufacturing facility in North America, tying Clairton's present-day map to the Mon Valley's steel and river economy. The neighborhood map has a civic side too. The Montour Trail begins near the coke works and runs nearly 47 miles toward Coraopolis. Clairton Park brings a swimming pool, baseball fields, basketball, picnic areas, and pavilions into the city, while the public library, senior center, churches, and recreation programs fill in the everyday routine. Clairton is a Pittsburgh-area river city where the ovens, trailhead, and park all sit within the same small municipal footprint.
