Clare, MI

Clare grew around the Pere Marquette Railroad and the old Isabella–Tobacco River route in 1870, when lumberman William McEwan’s camp became a town site. The village incorporated in 1879 and the city in 1891. Today US 10 and US 127 still meet at Clare, keeping the old crossroads role visible on the drive through central Michigan. Clare had 3,254 residents in 2020, and the Clare Downtown Historic District keeps the original timber-and-rail center recognizable. Water and trail give the crossroads its current rhythm.

The South Branch of the Tobacco River runs through town, and a dam creates Lake Shamrock just north of downtown. The Pere Marquette Rail-Trail follows the former rail corridor into town, while McEwan Street and Cops & Doughnuts add familiar local stops. Clare is a small city where highway traffic, railroad history, river water, and local business still meet in the same few blocks. The old downtown still benefits from that same meeting of routes, with local stops close to the highway.
