Clarence, PA

Clarence is a Centre County census-designated place in the northern part of Snow Shoe Township, a mountainous section of central Pennsylvania west of State College. The community lies near the geographic center of the township and just south of Snow Shoe borough, with the West Branch Susquehanna River part of the broader watershed. Roads through the area climb and descend through forested ridges, linking homes and clearings to the larger valley network.

Snow Shoe Township was formed in 1840, and its history grew around lumber, coal, and the work of getting people and goods through difficult mountain terrain. Clarence and nearby Moshannon became the township’s principal named communities, giving the broad backcountry a few recognizable points on the map.
