Clark, SD

Clark is a Clark County city and county seat in east-central South Dakota. The 2020 census counted 1,148 residents. The city’s courthouse, library, clinic, schools, parks, and municipal services give the surrounding farm country a local administrative center. Commercial Street, U.S. Highway 212, and the old rail corridor divide the town into the north and south sides, while roads lead toward Watertown, Huron, and the broader prairie region.

A post office opened at Clark in 1880, the town was platted in 1882, and the first railroad tracks reached the center that same year. The city was officially founded in 1886 and took its name from the county; an early variant was Clark Center. The railroad and county government established Clark’s long-term role. Today the Clark County Courthouse still houses county offices, and the Emil M. Larson Library occupies the Ullyot Building with City Hall. Clark’s story is a familiar prairie combination of rail, county records, farm trade, and public buildings, all gathered around a small commercial street.
