Clarks Grove, MN

Clarks Grove is a Freeborn County city of 694 residents at the 2020 census, and its name is tied to the people who made the place work. The first post office opened in 1857, the community was laid out in 1890, and Danish American farmers built the Clarks Grove Cooperative Creamery that same year. They pooled milk, used new butter-making equipment, and created one of the first cooperative creameries in Minnesota. The idea spread far beyond town, but the original creamery kept Clarks Grove at the center of the story.

The creamery was also a town-builder in the everyday sense. It expanded with a cooperative elevator, general store, and lumber yard, while its building hosted talks, meetings, and school recitals. Dairy farms surrounded the community, and the Rock Island Railroad came through as the village grew. The creamery closed in 1996, yet the 1927 fireproof brick building still stands as a reminder of the years when milk, butter, rail service, and Danish cooperative habits all met at the same corner of Freeborn County.
