Clarksville, TX

Clarksville has been Red River County's seat since the county was organized in 1835, giving this North Texas town a courthouse-square center older than the state around it. James Clark founded the town in 1833, and the early community grew as a crossing and trade point near the Red River. McKenzie College opened four miles away in 1841, while academies, churches, mercantile houses, and newspaper offices filled out the town's nineteenth-century life. U.S. 82 and State Highway 37 still bring Clarksville into the regional map between Texarkana and the Oklahoma border.

Downtown is where the history becomes easy to read. The renovated 1885 Red River County Courthouse, the Old Jail Museum, Miss Belle's House, the Red River County Public Library, antique shops, and historic markers all sit within walking distance of the square. Clarksville Independent School District keeps the city's everyday calendar local, while the Piney Woods edge brings trees and green roads beyond the courthouse blocks.
