Clarksville, VA

Clarksville is a Mecklenburg County town on Kerr Reservoir, better known locally as Buggs Island Lake, near Virginia’s southern border. The 2020 census counted 1,300 residents. Clarke Royster founded the town in 1818 on land along the Roanoke River that had long been used by the Occoneechee people and by traders moving between paths. Tobacco made Clarksville a major market in the nineteenth century; river navigation, a plank road, and later the railroad carried the crop outward. When John H. Kerr Dam flooded the river in the early 1950s, the town’s relationship with water changed for good, and Clarksville became Virginia’s only lakeside town.

Virginia Avenue and the Clarksville Historic District still hold the old commercial spine, with homes, churches, shops, and views toward the reservoir. LakeFest takes over the town each July, while fishing tournaments, the municipal dock, Longwood Park, and Occoneechee State Park keep the lake in daily use. The state park adds campsites, cabins, boat ramps, a museum, and 20 miles of trails that interpret both the Occoneechee past and plantation history. Clarksville also has a regional museum, fine-arts center, ball fields, and a small-business downtown. It is a town where tobacco warehouses gave way to docks and marinas, but the old trade-route logic remains: people still come to Clarksville to gather, trade, and head out over the water.
