Clay Center, NE

Clay Center is the county-seat city of Clay County, Nebraska, with 735 residents in the 2020 census. It was laid out in 1879 after a hard-fought contest over the county seat, and W.D. Young’s first frame building served as a temporary courthouse. The village incorporated in 1887. Its name honors Henry Clay, while its town story is tied to agriculture, radio, manufacturing, and the institutions that follow a county seat.

Clay Center’s industrial chapter began with the Old Trusty incubator and brooder factory, which employed hundreds and later helped launch radio station KMMJ in 1925. During World War II, a Naval Ammunition Depot was built west of town; that land later became part of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. The Clay County Museum now occupies the former KMMJ site and holds rotating exhibits, an antique engine show, and seasonal gatherings. Clay Center is a small Nebraska city where county government, farm technology, radio, war industry, and local memory share the same prairie address.
